When a storm caused an an Acqua Alta or extreme high tide along the canals in Venice we needed to change our plans. The vaperetto, or public water bus we had used to visit the island of Morano had to alter the schedule and stops due to the high water. We needed a quick late lunch when we returned to the main island so we took the opportunity to stop at the McDonalds location in Venice, Italy where they have gluten free offerings.

The burger was made with a Schar bun and came sealed in a plastic bag. We felt very safe there was no cross contamination.
It had two beef patties with cheese on a bun. There were no condiments and we had forgotten to order them on the touch screen ordering system. It was very busy in the store so we went ahead and ate it without. I would not suggest doing that. It needs ketchup at least. It was a McDonald's cheeseburger and when you need a last minute, quick meal it was fine.
We also ordered some cheese fries. These did have the risk of cross contamination but are gluten free. We checked with the employees at the location and were comfortable with eating these. We did not have any side effects after this meal. I would check at every location to ensure they have a separate frier and good safety precautions for celiacs.
There are so many amazing gluten free options in Venice that I would only stop here if it is an emergency... You have run out of gluten free snacks in your bag, you are diabetic and need food ASAP, or you just want the fun of having a gluten free McDonald's cheeseburger.
